When you are first allocated resources from Afrinic like an ASN and IPv4/IPv6 addresses you need to reset your maintainer password, also referred to as an MNT password.
You will require this password to create/modify/delete IRR objects like as-set and route/6 objects.
Afrinic have a page with the instructions on how to do this
https://afrinic.net/support/whois/maintainer/faqs/reset-maintainer-password
Below, more details have been added to each of the steps
1. Go to https://afrinic.net/whois/utilities
2. Input the new password you wish to use for the maintainer.
Here you will enter the password you want to reset YOUR password to in the Password field.
3. Click on "Generate hash”.
This will generate a hash that you will send to Afrinic
Above is an example of the result hash after you have clicked the button.
4. Send the hashed password to hostmaster@afrinic.net and specify which maintainer object should be updated.
Send an email similar to the below example email. Note that ZZZ-MNT is YOUR Maintainer object.
Subject: Reset maintainer password for ZZZ-MNT
Body:
Hi Lovely people at Afrinic
Please can you reset the maintainer password for ZZZ-MNT. The generated hash for the password is below
$2a$10$NKM34z6Fub2nZdqwnY08WupXe8vwqRMSMf2e4/dineqmuoR87kli2
Kind regards
Your name
Once you have emailed Afrinic they take 24-48 hours to put this hash into the WHOIS database.
A hash is used so that Afrinic staff will never know your password.
You will receive a confirmation it has been done and you can go about creating IRR Objects.
NOTE: Keep the password you input into the hash generator safe and secure, this is your MNT password
